State of Israel was created in 1948. In 2018 there will be 70 years of its foundation. During this period a lot of research has been conducted in different countries and languages. They dealt with international situation in which Israel existed and is existing, its international and home politics, problems of migrations, languages, intercultural relations in this state, its culture and identities.

In the USSR the Israeli Studies as an academic field did not exist as it was replaced with ‘anti-Zionist’ propaganda and so called ‘struggle with Zionism.’ The situation began changing in late 1990s and especially in 2000s when academic studies focused on the history of Israel, its place in the Near Eastern region, interrelations with other countries, and electoral politics of this state.

Mass Jewish emigration form the FSU promoted research of so called ‘Russian Israel’ in this state and abroad in English, Hebrew and Russian languages. At the same time, research dealing with Israeli culture, ethnic and religious problems, social practices and identity questions, are still scant in Russia.

The new initiative has been started by the Haifa University (Dept. of Israeli literature) and Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow (Center for Israeli and Jewish Studies). It includes the creation of a new collective monograph “70 years of Israeli society and culture: overcoming barriers.” The new collective monograph is expected to focus on several problems –

1.   Social groups and subcultures in Israel: notions, practices, relations;

2.   Intercultural and ethnic interactions;

3.   Religious practices and secularism;

4.   Mass media and society;

5.   Literature and arts.

These problems are to be in the focus of the new book, so articles on these subjects are especially welcomed. However, some other issues can be also approved. We do not supposed to accept articles concerned with international and home policy of Israel, economic situation in this state, questions of Palestinian-Israeli conflict, diplomatic issues, history of Israel and related problems.

The book is supposed to be published by the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences. Languages for articles – Russian and English. The articles may be approximately 8 000 words and submitted in electronic form (no hard copies are needed). The articles must be submitted in MS Word format (doc, docx, rtf), Times New Roman, 12 points. Guidelines for authors are attached.

Deadline for sending articles is July 1, 2018.

Please, note that before sending articles authors must send abstracts (up to 500 words) which include name and affiliation of the author(s), contact information (affiliation, e-mail address and phone number), title of article and abstract itself. Abstracts should be sent to Dennis Sobolev (dennissobolev@hotmail.com) and Elena Nosenko-Stein (nosenko1@gmail.com) by December 15, 2017.
